2025 KERIS Symposium
2025 KERIS Symposium Date Venue: December 16 (Tue), 2025, Convention Hall, Hotel Inter-Burgo Daegu KERIS held the 2025 KERIS Symposium under the theme “Happy Digital Education for All: Toward Sustainable Innovation and Growth in Education.” At the symposium, participants shared a variety of practical cases from educational settings amid changes in AI and digital environments and engaged in discussions aimed at supporting the qualitative growth of education. The program consisted of a keynote speech and a total of 12 topic presentations across two tracks and four sessions. In addition, exhibition programs were operated to allow participants to experience AI-based educational services and platforms firsthand, enhancing their understanding and participation. Through this symposium, KERIS provided a platform for communication connecting educational practice, policy, and technology, and will continue its efforts to expand discussions on digital- and AI-based educational innovation and sustainable growth.

Dr. Jaeyoung Chung, President of KERIS, chaired Session 2 of the GATE Forum, and various AI and digital education exhibition booths—such as TocToc! Math Expedition, Korean for Everyone, and EdZip—were showcased. This event provided an important opportunity to explore national strategies and global cooperation initiatives to lead the AI-driven future. KERIS will continue to contribute actively to building a digital- and AI-based collaborative ecosystem for educational innovation.

Singapore MOE Visits KERIS to Explore Digital Education Innovation
The delegation from the Singapore Ministry of Education visited KERIS to gain first-hand insight into Korea’s digital education policies and leading practices. The visit provided a meaningful opportunity for both sides to explore Korea’s ongoing digital education innovation initiatives and strategies for strengthening teachers’ digital competencies—areas in which the delegation expressed strong interest. During the discussions, the two parties explored various opportunities for practical collaboration and emphasized the importance of continued partnership in advancing digital education.

KERIS–IDB Discuss Cooperation on Education Development in Latin America
On September 18, the Korea Education and Research Information Service(KERIS) held a meeting with the Inter-American Development Bank(IDB). The meeting was attended by key figures, including Mercedes Mateo-Berganza(Chief of Education at IDB) and Andrés Rodríguez Bosa(Director of the Department of Educational Technology Resources, Ministry of Education of Costa Rica). The two organizations discussedlong-term cooperationin the field of digital education, including the development of AI competency assessment and training programs for teachers in Latin America.

Uruguay’s High-Level Delegation in Digital Education Visited KERIS
On September 16,a high-level delegation from Uruguayincluding Centro Ceibal, the Ministry of Education and Culture(MEC), and the National Administration of Public Education(ANEP)visited the Korea Education and Research Information Service(KERIS)to share experiences on AI-driven education policies and digital-based education innovation between the two countries. KERIS shared its strategies for AI-based teaching and teacher training, while Ceibal presented outcomes from its AI Education Research Center(EduIA). KERIS also highlighted its project with the Inter-American Development Bank(IDB), which developed an AI competency framework and diagnostic tools for Uruguayan teachers. Both institutions agreed to expand cooperation through an MoU, including joint research, pilot projects, and teacher training programs. The delegation also visited Sookcheon Elementary School and Daegu National University of Education to observe Korea’s digital education practices, noting valuable lessons for Uruguay’s teacher training and policy development.

KERIS Expands Joint Operation of High-Quality Korean Higher Education Content with 10 ASEAN Countries
The Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS) has been serving as the secretariat of the ASEAN Cyber University (ACU) Project since 2016, promoting continuous collaboration in online higher education between Korea and the 10 ASEAN countries. This year, in cooperation with the ASEAN University Network (AUN), KERIS conducted a needs assessment survey to identify preferred subject areas for tailored curricula across the ASEAN region. Based on the results, a call for proposals was launched to jointly develop and expand high-quality Korean higher education programs. On June 30, KERIS signed Memorandaof Understanding (MOUs) with five Korean universities—Kangwon National University, Busan Digital University, Yongin University, Wonkwang Digital University, andOpen Cyber University of Korea—for the joint operation of online courses with ASEAN universities. Through these agreements: Kangwon National Universitywill offer an emergency care curriculum in partnership with Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy and Dong A University of Medical Technology in Da Nang, Vietnam. Busan Digital Universitywill provide a curriculum on big data utilization with the University of Information Technology and Yangon Computer University in Myanmar. Yongin Universitywill collaborate with Chulalongkorn University in Thailand on a Taekwondo curriculum. Wonkwang Digital Universitywill deliver a global tourism geography and resources course with Xam Neua Technical College in Laos. Open Cyber University of Koreawill operate a course on industrial digital transformation across ASEAN countries. All course content will be made available on the ACU platform (aseanoer.net), operated by KERIS, and offered online to learners not only in the ASEAN region but also globally.

KERIS Signs MOU with State Institute for School Quality and Educational Research in Bavaria, Germany
On June 26, the Korea Education and Research Information Service(KERIS) signed a memorandum of understanding(MOU) with the State Institute for School Quality and Educational Research(ISB) in Bavaria, Germany, to explore opportunities for institutional collaboration.ISB is aresearch institute under the Bavarian Ministry of Education that supports education policy development and the improvement of school education quality. This agreement was established to facilitate the sharing of experiences and best practices in digital education innovation betweentwo institutions. The signing ceremony was attended by President Jaeyoung Chung of KERIS, Head Sebastian Pfanzelt of ISB, and other representatives from both organizations. The key areas of cooperation outlined in the MOUinclude: Sharing experiences and policies related to digital education in Korea and Germany; Joint exploration of the potential and strategic direction of digital education in the AI era; Establishing a foundation for institutional collaboration to advance education in both countries.

KERIS and UNESCO Hosted ICT Capacity Building Programme for Africa
KERIS co-hosted the “ICT Capacity Building Programme: ICT Transforming in Africa” with UNESCO from June 9 to 13 in Seoul. This training program is part of the third phase of the “ICT Transforming Education: UNESCO-Korean Funds in Trust Project". It was designed to strengthen the capacity of education policymakers from three African countries—Tanzania, Uganda, and Namibia—in formulating and implementing digital education policies. Funded by the Republic of Korea–UNESCO Funds-in-Trust, the training aimed to enhance understanding of Korea’s digital education policies and ecosystem, while providing participants with hands-on experiences of various innovative practices. The delegation participated in seminars that covered KERIS’s digital education policies and services, public-private cooperation cases in African education innovation, and classroom innovation cases led by Korea’s digital transformation pioneer teachers. Following the seminars, participants visited the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education and local schools in Gyeonggi-do to observe policy implementation in realA-world settings. In addition, design-thinking workshops were held to share the current status of digital education policies in the three participating countries and to conduct hands-on policy planning exercises tailored to each nation. The latter part of the training featured case studies on Bridge project in Africa byKorean National Commission for UNESCOand initiatives to develop AI competency framework and diagnostic tool for teachers. The program concluded with a visit to SoftLab, where participants explored diverse models for policy collaboration.

KERIS and CEIBAL Discuss Renewal of Digital Education Partnership
On May 15, 2025, the Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS) held a meeting with Uruguay’s digital education agency, CEIBAL, to discuss the renewal of their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).H.E. Paolo Scheiner, Ambassador of Uruguay to Korea, and Consul Gabriela Silva Canzani also attended the meeting and expressed hope for continued collaboration in digital education. Both sides reviewed ongoing joint projects and exchanged ideas on policies to support Uruguay’s digital education transformation. Following the meeting, participants visited Soha Middle School in Gwangmyeong to observe a class using AI-based digital textbooks and share experiences in digital learning.

Global Education Reform Conference Held in Conjunction with the 2025 APEC Education Ministerial Meeting
On May 13, 2025, theGlobal Education Reform Conferencewas held at the Jeju International Convention Center. This event was organized as an associated forum to the 2025 APEC Education Ministerial Meeting, under the theme“Educational Innovation and Global Cooperation in the Era of AI and Digital Transformation.” In theInnovation Sessionfocusing on primary and secondary education,President Jae-youngChungof KERIS moderated a panel discussion on the topic“Teacher-led Classroom Innovation.”The session discussed strategies for ensuring the stable adoption of AI and digital technologies in classroom instruction. At theK-EDU exhibition booth, KERIS promoted the use ofAI-based digital textbooksthrough live classroom demonstrations and hands-on experiences, providing participants with insights into the future of digital learning in Korea.
